A record label have complained to my file hosting company about the mp3 files on this site and they have taken down all my mp3 links without even a phonecall or email to let me know......How rude! It is strictly illegal but it takes a little more than that to keep this man down (just a little more mind you....) So give me a week or so and i'll have them all back up with a nice big update to boot....

Hello everyone,
Sorry about the big delay since the last update, I started a new job and have been pretty busy, but I've plenty of new tracks to get stuck into over the next few weeks so check back soon!
The Quantic Soul Orchestra - Pushin' On
This good looking chap is a lad called Will Holland who is also known as Quantic and The Quantic Soul Orchestra and he makes some of the most amazing funk, I don't know how does it, but he manages to get it sounding like it was made 50 years ago (in a good way!) He mixes loads of styles but mainly Soul/Funk and Jazz with some of the best sounding drums I've ever heard on a track. Check out all of his stuff.
Midlake - Roscoe
This is the first track taken from Midlakes amazing 2006 album "The Trials of Van Occupanther." I never really got into it till around the end of 2007 for some reason but after 2/3 listens it just grew and grew and got better each time and I think we all know that's the sign of a great album.... well worth catching.
The Notorious B.I.G. - Juicy
"Fuck all you ho's......" One of the best hip-hop tracks ever.
Bill Withers - Grandma's Hand
Old Bill here is undoubtedly one of the best and most recognisable soul singers of the last 40 years but this amazing song sometimes gets over looked by some people but as soon as they hear it they know they have heard it before...... No Diggity by Blackstreet.
The Clash - Straight To Hell
While we are on the subject of songs being covered, sampled or whatever, see if you can recognise which popular Sri Lankan refugee took the opening riff from this great Clash track and pretty much used it for the basis of her current huge hit?
The Stone Roses - I Wanna be Adored
One of my all time favorite albums is The Store Roses self titled debut. If you ask me to pick my favorite track from it, your going to probably get a different answer depending on my mood because pretty much everyone is ace.
While we are at it you may as well check out Ian Browns new single "Stellify" from his upcoming album "My Way" I'm really digging this track and I just hope his album as good!
Rush - A Passage to Bangkok
I'm going to be totally honest here and say I have not listened to Rush since I was about 14, when I had a little prog rock fad, but I was reminded of them last week when I watched a film called "I Love you, Man" and they pretty much talk about Rush the whole way through the film and it brought it all back. This is not one of their best known tracks but I love it to pieces and I think I may even have it on tape somewhere.
Lisa Mitchell - Neopolitan Dreams
What's this? A runner up of one of those awful pop idol type shows (Australian Idol I'm told) on this overly snobish music blog? Yup, and this is one of the best pop songs I've heard in the last 12 months, no joking. Amazing. Oh and she's a total sell out too as this was used in a washing Detergent advert..... (I truly wish I was good enough at something to sell out...... one day maybe?)
Pixies - Where Is My Mind!
It seems like I pissed a few people off with my (somewhat) blasphemous talk of Husker Du being the start of Grunge in the last update, well just to calm the waters (You're wrong by the way) here is one of the Pixies best tracks, you know the one that's used in that epic final scene from Fight Club. Probably one of the best uses of music in a modern movie.
Massive Attack - Dissolved Girl
There are a few bands that to me remind me of a certain time in my life and remind me of certain events both good and bad, but with Massive Attack they are all good. They are playing here in Dublin in October and I can't wait to see them again. I still think the first time I saw them was almost like a religious experience, I was kinda worried they would be a disappointment as they have such a complex and heavy sound but how wrong I was...... both shows are now sold out, but if you have never seen them live put it on the must-do list.
The New Pornographers - Mass Romantic
I don't really know a huge amount about these guys (and gal I think?) but with a name like that I just had to have a little listen and this song really stood out, the opening riff is a little harsh but the song is very much like a mix of cheap trick, beck and the Pixies which can only be a good thing.
That is Larry Heard (Mr. Fingers) playing in Dublin a while back and I'll be sticking up a few photos from that amazing gig in the next update. I think there may even be an interview floating round as well.
I also wanted to give a shout out to a very cool guy called Tristan who I met recently who has a burgeoning music blog http://tristan-beatsandpieces.blogspot.com/ - check it out and tell him I sent ya!

Hello,
I've been thinking of things to do with the blog as I think just rattling on about songs I love could get a little tiresome for a lot of people so I want to try out a few things. I love photography and from my general hanging around (read: schmoozing) of the Dublin club scene I've been lucky enough to shoot a few amazing nights around my adopted town.
So here are a few photos and videos from a great night out last September at Nightflight in the Button Factory in Temple Bar.
This cheerful chap is Todd Olsen, he is better known as Todd Terje and is from Oslo. He is very much at the forefront of the Scandinavian nu-disco scene along side Lindstrom and Prins Thomas.

Todd was also kind enough to do an interview with us before he went on stage. Here he is being bombarded with (some-what) intelligent disco questions by Paul Fogarty (Pablo) who is one of the brilliant Night-Flight Dj's

Atlas Sound - Walkabout (Feat. Noah Lennox)
Summer music is pretty tough to get right, but one band who pretty much hit dead on target is Animal Collective. When I heard "Merriweather Post Pavilion" while sitting on a very cold bus in January of this year in Dublin I could almost feel the after-sun cream soothing my sunburnt shoulders in the upcoming summer. Well this little ditty from Atlas Sound features Noah Lennox from Animal Collective (and he just happens to be Panda Bear too, seriously where do these guys find the time....) and it's pretty special summer music. Atlas Sound have a new Album coming up in October (Summer 2010 soundtrack?) called Logos and it should be a stormer.
Death In Vegas - Aisha
Iggy Pop maybe selling insurance to us now (from a company who won't actually insure musicians!) but he is still 100% legend in my book (well ok, maybe 99.9998% Legend) and a combination of his Vocals and some Death in Vegas filth is too much for me to resist! As a matter of fact, this song contains one of my favorite moments in music, at around 3.02 there is a really short organ solo which just gets my blood boiling (in a good way) and is then followed with what I can old describe as "Organ Scratching." Amazing. Also, have you ever noticed how much Kasabian really want to be Death in Vegas?
INXS - Don't Change
Famous bands are famous for a reason. They make music *lots* of people want to listen to. I sometimes like to listen to a famous bands early stuff to see what they were like before they hit that sweet spot of credibility and popularity. Turns outs, INXS were a pretty decent post punk, new wave band. This is from their 1982 album "Shabooh Shabooh" and I personally think it inspired the track "Don't You" by simple minds from the Breakfast Club soundtrack. Great stuff.
Hot Chocolate - Cadillac (the revenge rework)
I first heard this track on the recent Trevor Jackson (Playgroup) mix he did at Studio B in New York and it's one of the best remixes I've heard in years. It still sounds like you listening to a track from 1976 but it's also a slamming nu-disco track that would fill a dance floor no problem. I defy you to get down when Errol Brown sings "Heaven's In The Back Seat Of My Cadillac."
Husker Du - Don't Want To Know If You Are Loney
Part of the recent US rock time-line went a little like this; Punk (Ramones, Clash) then there was big haired rock (Motley Crew, Whitesnake) then after that came Grunge which came to the forefront with bands such as Motherlove bone and Soundgarden. Way before grunge Husker Du started off as a straight up Punk band but after a few albums they developed their sound by adding in more melody to their tracks and slowing things down a little. In this 1986 song you can almost hear the start of grunge, amazing lyrics with an emphasis on nailing the melody but still keeping the punk sound and drums. People always talk about the pixies being the start of grunge and inspiring Nirvana, well that's bollox, this is three and a half minutes of proof. Oh, yeah, complete respect to the guy on the left with the mustache.
Project Jenny, Project Jan - Negative
This song is pretty much a guy talking about how dirty his girlfriend is and how he managed to loose the film of their escapades while walking about town in NYC. He also sings the parts of the song where a normal band would put a guitar. This blog almost writes itself.
The Egyptian lover - Freak-a-holic [12 inch long version]
I first heard this song on an Andrew Weatherall (one of my general music heros) mix and pretty much instantly fell in love with it. Then I looked for a photo of him for the blog and saw the masterpiece above and pretty much decided that he is the coolest Egyptian musician around. This is the much sort-after 12" version. Yeah.
jj - ecstasy
I don't really know how to describe this song, it has pretty cheesy lyrics and pretty heavily samples a crappy hip-pop (I just made that up, have you heard anyone else use that before?) song by Lil' Wanye but I still can't stop listening to it and I love it.
I really want to make it clear to people that I put songs up here for people to download so that they go out and either buy their album or see the band/artist live. So if you hear a track on here that you like, buy the album or check out to see if they are playing near you soon and buy a ticket.

Hello,
Here is another fine selection of tracks for you to devour, again all the tracks have their Album details as "Sonic Sandwiches" so you can just download them all and stick 'em on your ipod/mp3 player and listen to them when you want, this way you don't just hear them through your crappy laptop speakers.... let's get going;
Cramps - Human Fly
This song is pretty special, I'm a big fan of acoustic singer/songwriters such as Elliott Smitt, Bon Iver, Bright eyes and the likes, and this guy can stand up against the best of 'em. While most of his stuff is is very simple with either a guitar or piano he also plays in a few other bands and projects such as Norfolk & Western and She & Him. He is only 22 years old as well.
While searching for new tunes, this guy's name just kept popping up and for good reason, he makes ridiculously lush Electronica (some would call it techno?), a lot of tracks get slapped together and rushed out but give this track a listen and you can tell that this guy spends a lot of time perfecting each little sound. A real builder.
Someone mentioned to me that a good few of the tracks I've been putting up here on the blog are "long" Well this groove bomb weights in at almost 12 minutes and I think it's all the better for it, it's a disgrace that radio/tv have forced song writers to try and keep it under 4 min.... it's a joke. Oh yeah, in case you didn't know Marvin Gaye is amazing.
To balance things up, this song is barely over 2 minutes long, but it gets the job done in the time..... The Psychobilly rockers at their best, if you were going to have a Halloween party, these guys would be the band I would recommend!
I'm a big fan of punk, but it's one of those genres when you have to really search for the great bands, obviously Punk was originally a UK thing, but I think some of the best stuff came out of the states in the sort of "Post Punk" era of the mid-to-late 80's. I first heard this track about 12 years ago on a BMX video and it still rocks.
Beastie Boys are one of those bands that are pretty much allowed to do what ever they want musically and it's because they pull it off. They genre-jump more than any band that I know and they still managed to sound amazing. I'll never forget arriving at a gig of theirs years back and hearing them break into "Sure Shot" the entire place and myself went absolutely nuts! They have a new album coming out in September called "Hot Sauce Committee" Oh yeah.
I've seen LCD Soundsystem live a good few times and they always play into a song after "Yeah!" (which is a event in it's self) the first time I heard it I could not put my finger on what it was and kinda forgot about it, but then one day I was randomly flicking though my Ipod and there it was! I actually had it on my Ipod as "Carl Craig - Throw" but it was released under one of his aliases "Paperclip People". Such a great rolling bassline and people this bad boy is 15 minutes long. Get it into you Cynthia .
When I was a nipper I used to buy loads of music videos, just bands playing live for 1-2 hours and I could watch them for hours absorbing every little bit of it, and it was really the only way you could see what a band was like live apart from actually going to the gig. Now however by the time you get home from a gig some guy (probably me) has uploaded all the best bits to youtube.... which is great in one way, but did you see the Daft Punk coachella videos of them laying waste in their Pyramid before you went to see them? Imagine seeing that show with no idea what was gonna happen. Yeah. Talking heads made one in 1983 called "Stop Making Sense" and it puts every other concert video to shame, I wont bother trying to explain any of it, but it would be worth going out of your way to see it, even just for David Byrnes slick dancing.
A friend played this song for me at a party a few months back and it has been on constant rotation since, The opening cello piece caught my ears straight away and it is repeated though out the whole song on guitar, bass and cello again. Lou Reed has always been a bit of a unknown entity in my books, after the Velvet Underground he never really got it together enough to better their work but to me this track may just have gone and done that. Epic.
Here is another Techno track for you, while John Tejada's was a slow builder which doesn't really drop till around 3 minutes in, this track is an all out, end-of-night stormer which should really come with a health warning. Play loud. Play very loud.
As you may have guessed from previous updates, I love my Ragga & Dance Hall! This track was released in 1985 and was a missive hit in Jamaica and it's riddem has been sampled to death but I still think this is one of the best modern reggae tracks.
A bit of a one-hit-wonder but this track from Biz Markie is brilliant fun, he pours his heart out about getting burned by a girly he liked....... Can't see 50 Cent laying it all out like this.
Probably best known by most as covering "People are Strange" by The Doors on the Lost Boys oundtrack (or is that just me?) Echo & the Bunnymen only have a few real gems but in my opinion this is the best of them. You might recognise it from the film Donnie Darko.
One of my all time favorite bands in Broken Social Scene, they have such a unique and identifiable sound, their albums are works of aural art and live, they are one punch, knock-out good! If you were going to pick out one of their 19 members to be a fully fledged credible pop star, Leslie Feist is the one. Yummy.

Hello,
A few of you nice people, some I know, most I have never met before have emailed me to let me know what you think about the music I'm putting up here, keep the feedback coming, I probably wont listen to the negative bits but at least I know you care about the music!

The very first song I put on the Blog was from a band called the "Archie Bronson Outfit" and loads of people have said they thought it was amazing, so for a little treat, here are two more songs from their 2006 Album "Derdang, Derdang"
They are currently in the studio and the new album should not be too far away and with Tim Goldsworthy (DFA) producing it, it should be nothing short of amazing. (No pressure!)
I love swearing as much as the next bloke, but I personally don't like the use of swear words in bands names, there are enough words in the the English language to avoid this and I also feel silly saying the bands name out loud if someone asks who they are..... although on the other hand, who knows maybe this is the tipping point of when certain swear words pass into everyday use (like damm). It's probably not though.
I played this next song on my Ipod on the bus coming home after work last October and it made me feel a little uncomfortable, It's 10 minutes long and is quite dark and menacing but I love it. It's certainly not to everyone's taste, but give it a chance and see what you think!
This is a hard sell. Lil Wayne is one of those rappers you see on Mtv and you just assume he's going to be like the rest of them, huge in the states, but only for an album or two and then wash out.... but his Album "Tha Carter III" is actually pretty decent, now i'm definitely more of a hip hop fan than a rap fan but I'll open my ear to anything decent. Here is one of the best tunes off that album and a remix by one of the Mad Decent crew, Toy Selectah. Straight outta Cricklewood!
I'm a fan of Benga, you guys liked the last tune, so here is one his first tracks from his 2006 Newstep album. It's very simple stuff, but it's has serious groove.....
I dig older music. Most of the time it's more soulful and a bit purer than most of the stuff that's around today, so here is 3 older classic tracks that I've been listening to loads recently;
That classic 5 note blues guitar riff at it's best!
Everyone knows this track, but most can't place where they have heard it, think racecars and Tom Cruise.... yeah.
This song reminds me of summer holidays from school as a kid and with the recent glorious sunshine we've been having here in Ireland, I thought it only right to get it out.....
Dancehall/Reggae/Ragga, I love 'em all and this track is one of my all time fav's. Real Ragga Reggae.
Kasabian are a tough group to describe, they have some amazing songs, but their albums never quite gel like you hope they would. This is their latest track which is also on that Sony TV advert with the spinny thing and the footballer.
Natasha Khan is pretty much a musical genius in my books, like a credible Lilly Allen who can actually sing as well as write, here is (after a bit of faffing from letterman) a great live clip of her singing that amazing song Daniel.

Blue plastic expectations
Massive Sponge - 20 Songs (zShare)
Every now and again I do up a playlist of songs I like and put them in an order that sounds good and flows well together, "Massive Sponge" is the latest one of these, the files should be named properly for your ipod etc, just make sure they are in the right order......
01 - The Beat - Mirror In the Bathroom
The lyrics are about cocaine addiction and its side-effects of self-involvement and paranoia, but I just think it's one of the best Ska songs from the early 80's.
02 - Archie Bronson Outfit - Cherry Lips
I've not heard from them since they released this in 2006, but I've always wanted to catch them live as they are meant to be amazing.
03 - The Clash - Bankrobber
One of my favorite bands, I've been listening to The Clash since I came across "London's Calling" on Cassette when I was a little kid, this song is not very well known as it was never released on an album, just as a single in 1980, brilliant though.
04 - TroubleAndrew - BangBang
Pro-Snowboarder, Pro-Skateboarder and still has the time to make crazy, dancey, rocking music..... He' also good mates with Santi from Santogold who also sings on this track. Real Name is Trevor Andrew if you want check out his snowboarding on youtube.
05 - Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs - Soft Shock
Probably not the most obvious track from their latest Album, but in my opinion the best. Lush rock at it's best.
06 - Bat For Lashes - Daniel
Natasha Khan is Bat for Lashes, and I've never wanted to be called Daniel more in my life...... Amazing song that is now getting a good bit of air play.
07 - The Whitest Boy Alive - Inflation
Everyones ear's always prick up when this song starts, it's intro sounds like about 50 other songs.... Erlend Oye's "new" band.
08 - Bon Iver - Skinny Love
Probably one the best albums of 2007 and this song could easily be one of my favorite songs of the last 5 years. He also worked in the Vodafone store in Galway (my home town) a few years ago... but don't let that take away from this.....
09 - Of Montreal - Wraith Pinned To The Mist And Other Games
They are very hard to describe as nearly every one their 9 albums sounds very different from the previous one, but with super catchy melodies and child like lyrics what's not to like.
10 - The Wombats - Backfire at the Disco
I'm not a massive fan of the band, but this song is pure pop fun....
11 - The Lovin' Spoonful - Summer In The City
Summer of 1966, I'd say this song was all over the radio, It's been used on loads of TV programs and adverts since but is probably best known from the opening sequence to Die Hard 3.......
12 - Althea & Donna - Uptown Top Ranking
2 teenage Jamaican girls made this song in 1978 and when John Peel heard it he played it so much on UK radio that it got to number one in the charts, quality reggae.
13 - Arthur Lee - Everybody's Gotta Live
Arthur Lee will always be known as the frontman of "Love" but this is probably my favorite of his songs which he recorded after they split up, amazing tune.
14 - The Band -The Weight
"Oh that's the song from The Big Lebowski" Yup, the very one...... Check out the concert-film that Martin Scorsese made of their last concert "The Last Waltz"..... I only saw it recently but it looked like these guys knew how to party!
15 - Damien Dempsey - Jar Song
An Irish song about drinking...... this song always made me think of Guinness and hangovers while I was in Melbourne, I've always a bit time for Damo (even with his overly emphasised accent)
16 - Architecture In Helsinki - Like It Ar Not
Speaking of Melbourne, I got to see them in their home town a while back and they are just as amazing live as you could imagine, massive fan of their quirky style.
17 - The Smiths - Asleep
In my eyes there are two types of people on this planet, the people who think Morrissey is one of the best song writer, performers ever to have been born and people who think The Smiths are "depressing and boring" if your of the latter, then get the fuck off my blog....... seriously, fuck off.
18 - Antony and the Johnsons - Shake That Devil
"That bird came at me with a knife" - Let the drums start before you make up your mind.....
19 - The Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog
Loads of distorted feedback to start with and only three music notes in the guitar riff, but it's how they played those notes..... amazing stuff Iggy, even the short closing guitar solo is epic. (Short Epic?)
20 - Lou Reed - The Gun
Lou's menacing mumblings about a gun..... from his 1982 album "the blue mask" It was recently very well used in the film "Rocknrolla"
I hope you like "Massive Sponge" I'm sure not every track is to everyone liking but some times it's hard to pick what to listen to when a full album isn't really what your looking for, that's where decent playlists come in handy.
